Richard Robertson started Rockport Pottery in Rockport, Maine in 1976. After receiving a B.A. in Fine Art at Goddard College in 1964, Richard was in Mendocino, California at the Mendocino Art Center from 1965 to 1969. He traveled to Japan where he took an apprentiship in Imbe studying Bizenware under Fujiwara Rakusan and remained there until 1971. He settled in Rockport, Maine five years later with his wife Lynette, where they raised their three sons.
